NYSC: Try It for Free on Wednesdays

Posted by The Blackout Blog |

Do you know that New York Sports Club has the nerve to charge first-time guests to try out their gym? The problem is, they're so damn convenient! NYSC is like Duane Reade or Starbucks: you can't escape because there's one on every other Manhattan block!

Given their urban ubiquity, chances are, you have a friend who goes there. It may be time to do this friend a favor because NYSC is letting members bring a friend for free on Wednesdays. If you're in the market for a new gym, this is usually a good time to look (before the New-Year's-resolution rush). Plus, I recently met a manager who said corporate is not happy with membership sales as of late. Result: you have negotiating power! At the very least, you should ask them to drop the enrollment fee, especially if your friend is not getting perks for recommending you.

There have been reports online that certain locations aren't participating, so be sure to call the location you want to try and verify with the manager (they're more likely to know the specifics on promotions than the sales people).

Bonus: they also offer trial memberships: 30 days for $30.

Free Shipping from Walmart.com through 12/20

Posted by The Blackout Blog |

You know, it seems Walmart sells everything these days, including iPads. Too bad there’s not one in the City. And the very thought of trekking to the one at Green Acres Mall (don’t ask how I know there’s one there) exhausts me.

Turns out they have a website. A website that’s offering free shipping through 12/20. Did I mention there’s no minimum purchase to qualify?

Wake up at 2am, pick up a Zipcar, and go toe-to-toe with Snookie’s aunts on Black Friday? Or point, click, and ship in your pajamas at no extra charge? In my book, it’s an easy choice.

(Though, for the store’s sake, I hope they stocked up on Bumpits!)

RSVP by today to attend a Juicy Couture shopping event hosted by Harpers Bazaar on Wednesday!

The Anachronism Presents: Wonderland Meets Oz

Posted by The Blackout Blog |

Ever wonder what would happen if you combined circus acts, neo-Victorian design, burlesque, and an accordion? Of course not, but now that I’ve brought it up, you’re curious, right?

The Anachronism’s Wonderland Meets Oz is a show (nay, an event) that exhibits live bands, neo-vintage artists, and thieving sideshow performers. Plus, there are fashion shows (custom corsets anyone)!

The spectacle goes down at Webster Hall on Sunday, 11/21 at 8, and $10 tickets can be purchased via their website or through the venue. Note: the event is 18+ even though the Webster Hall website says 21+.

If living in NYC has taught me one thing, it’s that art opening guarantee free wine and quirky good-looking people. Luckily for us, NYC artist Roberto De Luna’s newest exhibit is opening next week!

De Luna’s “Lost Weekend” is a series of Polaroids of still life, landscapes, and human subjects. The opening reception takes place at the Michael Mazzeo Gallery on Thursday, 11/18 6-8pm, and the exhibit runs through December 23rd. Check out the website for more info (NSFW, but artistically so).

So enjoy some beer and consider purchasing an original photograph, all of which will be priced to own.

Hmm...have you ever wanted to spray paint the Brooklyn Bridge or the Empire State Building? You know..leave your mark on some NYC landmarks? Well, you can't. Because it's illegal. However, you can paint the Flatiron building on Nov. 5th. Allow me to explain:

In addition to free ice skating at Bryant Park, as part of the NYC launch of CLEAR 4G's network, on November 5th you can paint the Flatiron Building with MobiSpray. MobiSpray is an insanely awesome experience that turns your mobile phone into a virtual spray can that projects onto anything, including historic landmark buildings.

The Guggenheim-MobiSpray'ed

On Friday, join Jürgen Scheible, the inventor of MobiSpray, and local graffiti artist Andy Dolan in painting the Flatiron. Photographers will be on hand to take pics of everyone's work, which can be found on the CLEAR 4G Facebook page. Sounds fun, and I'm sure your friends can't say they've ever written "___ was here!" on a building like the Flatiron (at least legally).

For more info on the event and other CLEAR 4G events, click here.

Raise your hand if you love opera!

Okay, now raise your hand if you don’t really love opera, but you love impressing your Facebook/Twitter friends with your access to awesome cultural events (especially the out-of-towners)!

Either category will love this deal: $25 seats for weekend performances the Met (The Metropolitan Opera if that wasn’t obvious)! Here’s how it works….

• Mondays 10am-midnight, you can select performances you want to see that weekend.
• On Tuesdays at noon, a lottery is held, and the winners’ and waitlist names are posted. Winners’ tickets are available for purchase at that point.
• By Wednesday at 5pm, winners must purchase tickets or else, it’s open season for the waitlist (first come, first served).
• By Thursday at 5pm, waitlisters must purchase their tickets

Things you should know: the tickets are random, but they’re actual seats in the Orchestra and Grand Tier (usually $200), not standing-room. And the Weekend Rush Tickets will be available through the end of the 2010-11 season. There are also Weekday Rush Tickets for $20.

Here’s the Met’s website with the details: http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/contests/drawing/index.aspx

PS, they’re doing Bizet’s Carmen in November. If you have ears, you’ll recognize songs from this opera. And if one of you wins tickets, you’d damn well better take me!
