UPDATE: Weekly Cinema has changed their subscription services - you now get 3 tickets a month for just $15.99!

As you all know, NYC movie ticket prices are RIDICULOUS. Ordering a ticket is approximately $13.00 at Fandango or Movietickets.com. So how would you like to get 2 tickets a month (plus one ticket free for signing up!) for a little more than the cost of one? For just $12.99 a month at Weekly Cinema you get TWO MOVIE TICKETS A MONTH PLUS ONE FREE for signing up.

Weekly Cinema

The tickets come in form of $14 credits to use at Fandago.com, which means you can use it anywhere Fandago or Movietickets.com sells tickets (NYC and beyond). So you get four tickets for just $15.99, which should cost you $55.00. After the first month, you get 3 tickets a month for $15.99 (worth $42). The credits are good for three months.

BONUS #1: You instantly get one free movie ticket after signing up. This is the free trial period. (At the start of the next month your other two codes will be available and your card will be charged the $15.99.)
BONUS #2: If you have other movie lovers in your life, pass this on and if they sign up, you will get TWO MORE FREE MOVIE TICKETS.
BONUS #3: The codes are shareable, so you can give them to friends!

Once you get your ticket codes, they are valid for three months. You will get charged after your free trial period ends. During your free trial, we will do a pre-authorization hold on your card for the amount of your first month. This will only turn into an actual charge if you decide to start using their service after the free trial. You can cancel anytime, without a cancellation fee.

So sign up for Weekly Cinema and NYCRD will see you at the movies (since we signed up)!

Walter's Bar: See CHOMPetition for FREE

Posted by Samantha Chin |

It's a proven fact that alcohol can make ANYTHING funny. Improv is hilarious because it's in the moment, so when alcohol and good improv comedy can come together as one; sweet, sweet laughter is the result. And this is one sweet deal:

CHOMPetition is the world's largest improv tournament, with 32 improv teams competeing for the glorious title of CHOMPion. Tickets to the show are usually $5, which is already a bargain, but if you drink at Walter's Bar, you get to see CHOMPetition for free!

When drinking at Walter's (8th Ave. btw 29th and 30th), all you have to do is ask for a special card that will get you into the show for free. Drinks are cheap at Walter's, so that won't be an issue.

Go to Walter's during the week to unwind, have a drink, and then see CHOMPetition for free Saturdays from 7-8:30 PM. Cheers!

P.S. November 20th is the Special All Star Improv Game, benefitting Thirst Aid. For this one, you might want to pay the $5 because Thirst Aid's progam is dedicated to helping the world solve its water problems.

For more information on CHOMPetition, click here.

To get your card to see CHOMPetition for free, visit:
Walter's NYC
389 Eighth Ave (btwn. 29th and 30th)
New York, NY 10001

To see CHOMPetition, visit:

OLDA NAVY: Sale this Saturday

Posted by Samantha Chin |

Old Navy is one of my favorite places to shop; not because I enjoy battling mom's over fleece pullovers or jeans, but because the sales they have every now and then are killer. Last year, I bought 6 fleece scarves for $6. And this Saturday, from 7 am-10 am only, you can buy select sweaters for only $10.

You do have to wake up super early on a Saturday, but with fall here and winter coming, when else will you be able to get great sweaters for $10 each?! Probably never.

P.S. Before you go, make sure you visit Old Navy's Facebook page. Under the Barker's Bones tab, you can play a little game and end up with coupons for $5 off $50, $15 off $75, and $10 off $50.

Thanks to Mojo Savings for spotting this great deal!

We all know somebody who’s a fan of Dexter, Weeds or Nurse Jackie, right? Well, if you’re anywhere near NYC, you have the chance to see these shows and others take over 3 multi-million-dollar midtown penthouses thanks to the Showtime House.

For the past 3 years, Showtime has taken over residential spaces and turned architects and designers loose on the interiors, transforming them into opulent incarnations of Showtime's original series. This year, the theme is technology, and 14 designers have put their best feet forward, producing over-the-top interiors for the penthouses of the Cassa Hotel.

Tours of the Showtime House are available this and next Saturday, 11am-5pm. It will cost you $15 (bring cash to pay when you take the tour) and the proceeds go towards the Harlem Children’s Zone, a non-profit that provides a charter school, family services, and a host of other opportunities to give children in need a fair chance at attending and graduating from college. HCZ was recently featured in the Davis Guggenheim feature documentary Waiting for Superman (in theaters now).

An afternoon in a fantastically fabulous loft and a chance to help an awesome educational organization. It’s a win-win, folks!

For more info and photos, check out the Showtime House Website.

Everything In Paper is offering 50 FREE sheets of origami paper to anyone who requests it!

"We'll ship you 50 sheets total, in 3 different sizes. Enough to create just about all the origami listed on this site! We'll even cover shipping, 'cause we're awesome like that (doesn't cost much to ship paper anyway)."

They just ask that if you decide you LOVE origami, you order from them. Fair enough, says NYCRD.

Ok, so I was at a guy’s house (not on the first date). After suggesting Thai delivery, he spent the next 10 minutes yelling our orders into the phone. He must have said his credit card number 3 times. Not the best aphrodisiac.

The whole time, I couldn’t help thinking: This would be so much easier if we did this online!

Seamless Web lets you do just that. They cooperate with thousands of local restaurants so that you don’t have to bother picking up the phone (unless you want to use their mobile app). And it saves your info for quick ordering!

As if this service weren’t enticing enough, they’re going to be parking their More Eat truck at various locations around the city beginning on 10/18 to collect your old (and now, obsolete) take-out menus. In exchange, you’ll get a fortune cookie with a ‘lucky number’ that could win you huge prizes: an iPad, free lunch for a week, even free lunch for a year (a $5,475 value)!

Here’s the More Eat truck’s schedule:
October 18th – Union Square – 11:30am-7:30pm
October 19th – Columbus Circle – 11:30am-7:30pm
October 20th – Madison Square Park – 11:30am-7:30pm
October 21st – Lexington Avenue between 57th and 58th Street – 11:30am-7:30pm
October 22nd – Washington Square Park – 11:30am-7:30pm
October 23rd – Brooklyn Flea (Fort Greene) – 10:00am – 5:00pm
October 24th – Brooklyn Flea (One Hanson) – 10:00am – 5:00pm

Can’t make it? Don’t fret! They’re offering $10 off your order with the promo code ‘MOREEAT’ for first-time users.

But what will happen with all those menus? Local artist Kevin O’Callighan will use them as inspiration for two sculptures to be unveiled on 10/23 and 10/24 at the Brooklyn Flea. Additional prizes and discounts will be available at the unveiling events.

Check out Seamless Web’s site for more info: http://www.seamlessweb.com/MoreEat/

I’m sure we both read blogs, emags and other publications online. My point—that we have left print behind. Gone are the days of paper, of toting around burdensome magazines, or folding the Times into an origami-like creature to avoid fights on the train.

Combining Frank Stella's pattern pieces from the 1960s and an old traditional craft called marquetry, Andisheh Avini creates his latest series of arresting abstractions. The tile style here was initially used as accenting in pre-Islamic architecture, but now mostly for trinkets and souvenirs. Fabricated in Iran and contrasted by silkscreens of the American hostage crisis, they reveal the irreconcilable tensions between Avini's homeland and adopted country.

While the recession is officially over, saving money and being frugal is still top of mind for responsible consumers. Part of this is the itch to never miss a deal – but sometimes that results in serious buyer’s remorse. If you buy from a store you can return simply return the item and all is well. But what happens when you buy a Groupon, Living Social or Tippr deal and you realize you actually won’t use it? That shit is final sale.

Enter dealigee!

dealigee is an online marketplace where you can now resell any deal you bought but don’t plan to use, OR buy deals you missed. dealigee currently supports the resale of vouchers bought from Groupon, Living Social, Tippr, DealOn, Gilt City, BuyWithMe, and youswoop and the cities covered include Chicago, New York City, and San Francisco.

Signing up with dealigee is easy - you simply log-in using your Facebook ID (they only collect your name and email – no other information). Buyers and sellers are validated with PayPal to ensure legitimacy and make sure the transaction is secure.

When you sell a deal, you get 100% of the sale except for a small transaction fee collected by PayPal – dealigee does not make money off your sale.

Buying on dealigee is also simple. You can purchase the voucher at its “buy now” price, or you can “make an offer” to the seller at a lower price. All transactions are handled via PayPal.

See? No more buyer’s remorse!

NYCRD DEALIGEE GIVEAWAY
As a bonus, dealigee is offering a special giveaway to NYCRD readers: a $100 Groupon gift certificate!

Still not sure about what to dress up as for Halloween? Here's a list of ideas that may be fun for Hallow's Eve. I've scoured online costume sites and here are some that I think are worthy of wearing:

-Box of Cereal
-Hot Dog
-Ketchup/Mustard
-Pizza
-Loaf of Bread

Noticed a recurring theme yet? I promise to you there is a method to my madness, because on October 31st, Halloween, if you go to Chipotle after 6 pm dressed like a processed food, you can buy a burrito, bowl, salad, or tacos for only $2!

Chipotle is great because they strive to use sustainable, deliciously fresh and local ingredients while staying away from processed foods. The $2 burrito deal is part of Boorito 2010 (cute), a partnership between Chipotle and Chef Jamie Oliver, who recently had a show titled "Food Revolution", to expose the horrors of processed food. If you decide to dress up, take a picture once you're at Chipotle and upload it here to enter their costume contest. The winner gets $2500, five runners up get $1000 each, and 25 runners up get a burrito party for 20 guests!

I'd do almost anything for food, and this sounds like it could be fun. For food costume ideas (remember it must be processed food), click here and here for some inspiration. Happy Halloween!

NYCRD Reviews: Dinner at Arang in Koreatown

Posted by Awesome in New York |

Walking into Arang on a drizzly night, I felt instantly transported.

First, the second floor location in the heart of Koreatown lifted me out of busy Manhattan and into a quiet and calm venue where I could catch my breath from the hustle and bustle of 32nd Street. After assessing the crowd and realizing that the majority of the patrons are actually speaking Korean, I could almost swear I'd traveled to another country. It's then I knew I was in for a treat.

Arang is run by mother-daughter team Su Song and Sunny Lim. They are committed to serving Korean comfort food in a relaxed and authentic environment. Sunny greeted me with a friendly smile and explained that most menu items are meant to be served family style.

I started with some traditional Korean mouth-waterers, as they called them. Kimchee, sprouts, pickled cucumbers and some cabbage. Having never tried kimchee before, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of flavor that could be packed into one bite.

[The "mouth-waterers"]

Next up I was served a still boiling bowl of Dookbaegi Bulgogi, a soup made with meat that had been marinated for hours beforehand. Again, the flavor was amazing and the meat was super tender.

[Dookbaegi Bulgogi]

The fundamentals of Korean unfiltered rice wine, similar to sake, but with a more milky texture. It was sweet but definitely not too much and accompanied some of the spicier dishes we tried nicely. My favorite part was the fact that it was served in a bowl.

[Rice wine]

Next up was the Haemul Pajun, or a seafood scallion pancake. I loved the texture of the veggies mixed with the shrimp, and the dipping sauce completed the picture.

[Haemul Pajun]

One of Arang's signature dishes, the Kimchee Jaeyook Ddukboki, was definitely one of my favorites. Sauteed spicy rice cakes are mixed with fermented cabbage and spicy pork and topped with lots and lots of cheese. It's a very comforting dish, good for a cold night, and the cheese balances the great spices.

[Kimchee Jaeyook Ddukboki]

The last menu item we sampled was the Bul Dak, or Spicy Fire Chicken. I must admit that I was scared when I hear the name as I don't usually eat things with the word "fire" in the title. Maybe the kitchen dumbed down the spice level for us a bit (or a lot), or something, but it wasn't nearly as spicy as I imagined and it actually had a lot of great flavor.

[Bul Dak]

Dinner at Arang was a great culinary experience and I would recommend it for anyone looking for an escape from the craziness of the city. Buon Appetito, or in Korean, mas-issge deuseyo!

On Tuesdays from 4-8 p.m. all alcoholic beverages are buy one get one free

FRUTOBER: Meet the Official Frutober Five

Posted by nyc editor |

The NYCRD call for Frutober participants yielded a wild crop of aspiring Frutobarians. Part scavengers, part hoarders and 100% savers, these are your Frutober Five:

[Katharine says: I'm baaaaack]

Katharine, NYCRD Executive Editor, created Frutober last year as a personal experiment to see how much cash she could save by being extremely frugal. Since it was so successful, she’s back for her second year in a row and can’t wait to experience the pain and reward all over again. She plans to use the money she saves towards Christmas presents, because re-gifting swag bag items isn’t really that cool.

[Kelvin says: Don't over eat, over travel]

While international travel and too much wine rank high on Kelvin's list of priorities, he digs having money in the bank (2-digit plus) just like everyone else. Following sites like NYCRD helps him enjoy the city on a budget, and Frutober was a great chance to take things up a notch. Any money saved will probably go towards his trip to Shanghai and new chew toys for his friend's puppies.

[Cindie says: I will not be a broke bridesmaid]

Cindie is a 23 year old Brooklynite, vegetarian, full-time higher education professional and part time graduate student. This Frutober includes her first foray into being a bridesmaid, and that event alone has been enough to make her bank accounts call for mutiny. She's trying to save on everything else so that being a bridesmaid doesn't cost her an arm or a leg (that wouldn't look good in the wedding photos!). Her money saved will probably go right to next semester's tuition and some fabulous clothes to wear to class.

[Katie says: I will conquer you, Sallie Mae]

Katie is a filmmaker based in Brooklyn who currently works at a small production house in Manhattan. Her Frutober goal is to start saving enough to be able to pay off her dear friend Sallie Mae while also scrounging up some funds for her next short film project. She’s also interested in seeing what she can (and absolutely cannot) live without. Her biggest challenge will be trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle and appropriate eating plan while on such a scrappy budget.

[Justin says: If you're not eating that, I will]

Justin, a publicist, knows all too well about the cost of living, playing, and working in NYC. With a penchant for three course meals and useless items of clothing, he hopes that his former love for 'food you usually take camping' will help him with this struggle. He also hopes that he will be able to save a dime (or forty) and get rid of that credit card balance.

Stay tuned for their weekly blog posts as they take you through their month-long money saving adventures! WILL THEY SURVIVE??!

Perhaps you will feel inspired yourself to see how well you can live on less, especially in this city. Read about Frutober here.
