The overlooked perfect date spot is the Manhattan cruise. In particular, the cruise from World Yacht.

Since my boyfriend was MIA the evening I was invited aboard the Duchess, I took a friend with me to enjoy and relish the experience. While she quickly realized riding a boat makes her sick, I instantly fell in love.

[hanging off the duchess]

We were seated near the window and were brought a menu and drink list. I thought the alcohol selection was perfect for a special night out - the wine list ranged from $32 (Bohemian Pinot Griogio) to $75 (B.V. Carnevos Pinot Nior Napa Valley 2005) and some of their more interesting cocktails include the World Yacht Vodkarita and Sweet Heart Fragoli, $12 each.

[the boat we road, duchess]

We chose not to order any drinks, as we were content with the complimentary champagne they served us with dinner. It was fresh, crisp, bubbly and tasted expensive, so if it was cheap they had me fooled.

After our starter, which was the cheese plate, the sun finally went down and the city lit up.

[say cheese]

For my appetizer I chose their watermelon and feta salad dressed with balsamic vinaigrette, which was a unique new twist for me. For my entrĂ©e I enjoyed their tender and juicy steak, cooked exactly how I asked (medium rare, thank you). I especially loved the horseradish potatoes – they didn’t need gravy, salt or butter because the flavor was so rich.

[the ingenious watermelon and feta salad]

[my angus steak dinner with the delish potatoes]

When we passed the Statue of Liberty, they played “Proud to be an American,” which was awesome mostly because my friend is Indian and she didn’t know what was going on. But in all seriousness, the Statue of Liberty is gorgeous lit up at night, and I almost trampled people as I rushed outside to take pictures before it was too late.

[lady liberty in all her glory]

Dressing up to go out on a date is a lost art these days, but not at World Yacht. Gentlemen, remember to throw on a blazer and ladies, get out that perky dress you’ve always wanted to wear, because most people will be decked to the nines and a few people will be reliving their 80’s prom.

[some of the NYC bridges lit up]

World Yacht strongly believes in dancing, which was embodied by their linoleum dance floor and live DJ in the middle of the boat. I definitely felt like I was crashing someone’s wedding by the end of the night as I watched a semi-awkward young man make his way to the middle of the dancing crowd, cheered on by a few cougars. I think this part of people watching made my dessert, raspberry cheesecake, taste a little bit sweeter.

[some of the Manhattan skyline]

A cute perk includes the option to buy a photo of you and your date (or birthday party) they snap before you board, which they later show you in a nice package. If I had been on a hot date with my boyfriend, I might have actually bought it.

The cruise lasts around three hours, so don’t make this your first date. Instead, save this for someone really special, because there’s nothing quite like eating dinner aboard a beautiful boat, watching the sun set over Manhattan and staring at Lady Liberty in her full glory on a boat deck in the arms of someone you love.

[the beautiful sunset with a small boat speeding by]

At the Fall Fashion Preview Party for GQ and Lucky Magazines the huge crowd at Banana Republic’s SoHo location was friendly, diverse and fashion-forward (“Is that an ascot?!”). In addition to the 25% store discount, guests enjoyed complimentary wine, champagne, and hors d’oeuvres.

When I walked in, the store looked immaculate, and the lighting was spectacular! There was a live DJ spinning and plenty of staff on hand to help shoppers.

[The chocolate-dipped strawberries were a hit]

The night started with a brief welcome followed by a fashion show featuring Banana Republic clothing and style commentary from GQ’s Brett Fahlgren and Lucky Mag’s Lori Bergamotto. The highlight of the evening was when a Banana Republic representative announced their new personal shopping service! Now, customers can set an appointment with an expert to help them choose items that best fit their style.

The only downer was that they ran out of alcohol around 8.

I think this is a great discount on "stripper" classes... get out the stillettos!

Admit it: Ever since you saw Jamie Lee Curtis do an on-the-fly striptease in True Lies, you knew exactly what it meant to embody pure sexiness. (We're sorry, but the routine is just too hot to hyperlink.) You might not have those kinds of moves, but luckily today's deal will get you there. Pay $18 and get two 70-minute striptease lessons from StripXpertease in Midtown -- a $40 value... though the poetry on their homepage is free. Your first class, Stripper Strength, will show you the fitness benefits of working the hottest floor and chair moves (the quickest way to True Lies thighs). Things heat up in your second Teaser class by showing you how to undress in a way that doesn't scream "the-doctor-will-see-you-now." Try a class with the gals or get some tips to let loose for someone else -- all at over 50% off.

Thanks to the online group buying revolution, many of us are suffering from buyer’s remorse… in two groups.

The First Group

I can’t believe I bought this 1 month of unlimited yoga deal – I don’t have time for this. And none of my friends do yoga either because they’re too busy partying with me! What a waste.

Second Group

Ugh! Why didn’t I buy that 1 month of unlimited yoga deal in time? I meant to buy it, and then I got so wrapped up at work I forgot and missed the deadline. Looks like its exercise DVDs for me again. Sigh.

That’s why there’s Lifesta.

Using Lifesta, you can sell your unwanted deals from Groupon, LivingSocial, kgb deals, Daily Flock, and Lifebooker Loot (among the 1,000 other daily deal and group deal sites) to people who actually want them. On the other end, if you missed a deal you can hunt Lifesta for it, and there’s a good chance it will show up.

All purchases are guaranteed by Lifesta, so you don’t have to worry that the deal you’re buying is fake. You download your voucher immediately after purchase, and the entire process is hassle-free because the seller and buyer never have to speak.

Case in point: the seller unloads their deal and gets their money back, minus a very small fee to Lifesta, and the buyer gets the deal at the original face value. Bing, bang, boom. Smiles, cheers, high-fives. Remorse gone.

FringeNYC: Affordable Theater through 8/29

Posted by nyc editor |

FringeNYC is a multi-arts festival that showcases hundreds of plays and performance-art pieces throughout the city. The festival is on right now and runs through 8/29.

Tickets are $15.00 for most shows, $10 for FringeJR kids shows (with free cast meet-and-greets) and $5 for FringeHIGH shows for young adults (limited availability).

Fringe NYC’s website allows users to search categories like comedy, musical and Vaudeville/sideshow among several others. And each show listing has a link to 8coupons deals in the vicinity. It’s deals all day at FringeNYC!

Here are a few titles that caught my eye:

23 Feet in 12 Minutes: The Death and Rebirth of New Orleans
On the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, meet six real-life New Orleans characters whose lives were irrevocably changed by the storm. Their raw, poignant, compelling stories are based on interviews conducted with over 60 Katrina survivors and New Orleans transplants.
A look at a story that still affects residents today.
Friends of Dorothy: An Oz Cabaret
Pasties, and glitter, and drag, Oh My! Follow Dorothy to the fantastical Land of Bras where she encounters the fierce and fabulous Wicked Bitch of the West and some colorful new friends in this extravaganza of striptease, aerial, magic, and visual delight.
Who doesn’t love a "colorful" twist on the Wizard of Oz!
Hamlet Shut Up
Classic tragedy. Silent comedy. Shakespeare's masterpiece, without all that pesky dialogue. Award-winning production from Los Angeles-based Sacred Fools features vaudeville, puppetry, live original piano score, and a shark. Holy shhhhh!
I suggest finding a theater-snob date and telling him you’re taking him to "a modern twist on Shakespeare." In the spirit of the show, keep mum about the silent part and wait for his reaction.

SEPTEMBER 9 — OCTOBER 29, 2010
Opening Reception: Wednesday, September 8, 6:00pm—8:00pm

LOMPCHING GALLERY is pleased to present A New Kind Of Beauty, by the artist Phillip Toledano.

Brought together for the first time as a solo exhibition, these breathtaking and provocative portraits depict people who have reconfigured their bodies by means of extensive plastic surgery. The photographs raise questions about self-perception and social paragons relating to what constitutes perceived notions of beauty.

Shot against a... stark black backdrop, the large-scale portraits present subjects that are stunningly rendered and isolated. Toledano’s highly-crafted images combine up-close physical observations that are imposing, detailed and display a dramatic illumination that is reminiscent of the chiaroscuro technique of Caravaggio.

Rather than presenting a study of physical augmentation that simply shows an apparent eradication of individuality via the surgeon’s knife, Toledano’s artistic achievement is the humanity that quietly projects from behind the faces of each subject—pride, hope, sadness, fear, awkwardness and defiance all abound. Despite their initial spectacle, the photographs emerge as gentle and respectful. Without a doubt, they engender a myriad of responses and debate. Toledano has certainly set the stakes high, both in terms of what he is depicting and the artistic methodologies used.

Phillip Toledano (b. 1968) was born in London and now lives and works in New York City. His photographs have been published in Aperture, Eyemazing, Harpers and The British Journal of Photography. Chronicle Books has just published Toledano’s third book 'Days With My Father', which documents Toledano’s last few years with his elderly father. As an artist, he works across mediums from photography to installation, primarily working with socio-political themes.

Exhibition continues through October 29th, 2010.

Lesley, a history professor in an unhappy marriage, has a drunk-driving accident whose sole victim is a tree in a neighbor’s yard. It’s just his luck that it wasn’t in a forest: someone was there to hear this tree fall, and they heard the anti-Semitic tirade that followed. By order of a judge, Lesley’s choices are to face jail time or to give a lecture on a significant Jewish figure in history at the local library.

Lesley settles on Daniel Mendoza, an English boxer from whose historic victories transformed the public’s perception of Jews throughout the country. Throughout his presentation, his asides reveal more and more about the circumstances surrounding his criminal conviction, his androgynously named “beloved spouse” Gene, and his purported contempt of Jews.

Randy Cohen, author of New York Times Magazine’s The Ethicist, pens a nuanced and humorous script that delivers an engaging and culturally relevant look at the social climate of 18th-century England through the lens of an erudite (and, at times, pompous) white American professor who ends up teaching more about himself than the Jewish boxer. Star and director Seth Duerr carries the one-man show with commanding stage presence, revealing the many layers of his complex character. And in the end, the audience is left questioning if it’s Jews that he hates or his own path in life.

Added bonus: most performances are followed by a talkback with those involved with the production. On the night that I attended, Cohen and Duerr spoke briefly about their views on the protagonist and took questions from the audience. Their detailed and thought-provoking answers opened me up to many different interpretations of the story and shed light on the not-so-direct path that led to the production of this show.

Performances of The Punishing Blow run Tuesday through Sunday (times vary) through 8/28, and tickets can be purchased for $18 at Telecharge.com.

Second bonus: Enter to win a pair of tickets for the August 28th performance! Details below.

ELEVEN ARTS and NEW YORK – TOKYO will bring the Japanese documentary film BEAUTIFUL ISLANDS, directed and produced by KANA Tomoko, and executive produced by KORE-EDA Hirokazu (“Nobody Knows”, “Still Walking”), to Walter Reade Theater @ Lincoln Center.

BEAUTIFUL ISLANDS will set off an alarm bell for global warming. This movie looks at three beautiful islands, shaken by climate change: Tuvalu in the South Pacific, Venice in Italy, and Shishmaref in Alaska.

The islands all have different climates and cultures, but the people all love their native lands. The film, which took three years to shoot, focuses on their daily lives. It portrays festivals that foster ties among the people, traditional crafts which have been passed on for generations, and peaceful lives by the water. They are all disappearing by climate change.

In the early seventies, Detroit was the musical hub of America. Everything from the chart topping sounds of Motown Records to the vicious proto-punk of THE STOOGES was being brewed out there and it seemed like there was no end in sight. But by the early eighties, the city was both a physical and cultural wasteland due to major label buyouts of the artists as well as the crippling drug habits of some of the others. Detroit’s most known musical export at the time was the vapid sounds of New Wave heartthrobs THE ROMANTICS; this wasn’t good. It took a gaggle of suburban skateboarders, a grade school teacher and a census bureau clerk to wake this city up from its slumber and start one of the first hardcore punk scenes in America. Why Be Something That You’re Not chronicles the first wave of Detroit hardcore from its origins in the late seventies to its demise in the mid-eighties. Through a combination of oral history and extensive imagery, the book proves that even though the Southern California beach towns might have created the look and style of hardcore punk, it was the Detroit scene - along with a handful of other cities across the country - that cultivated the music’s grassroots aesthetic before most cultural hot spots around the globe even knew what the music was about.

About Why Be Something That You’re Not: Detroit Hardcore: 1979-1984:

‘The Michigan hardcore scene was crazy mixture of DC-style teen-thug-purists and debauched elders with a taste for the newest in high energy freedom. Tony Rettman has done a great service to Western Culture by interviewing the prime knuckleheads involved in this scene and reporting what he finds. It's hard for me to believe the Necros first record was done almost 30 years ago, but it's the sad goddamn truth -- we're all grandpas now. Tony doesn't let any of the potential blowhards prattle on for too long, but he gets some great stories out of 'em and presents them with lean fast strokes. He dug up some boss pictures too, and the whole shebang makes some of the other volumes I've seen about this spot in the time-space continuum look even lamer than they did previously. There were certain aspects of the Michigan scene that made it the brightest, hottest spot on the world underground music map for a few brief moments. Tony would like to tell you why.’
-Byron Coley

About Touch and Go: The Complete Hardcore Fanzine ’79-’83:

Introductory essays by Tesco Vee, Dave Stimson, Steve Miller, Henry Rollins, Keith Morris, Peter Davis, Henry Owings, Byron Coley, Corey Rusk, John Brannon, and Ian MacKaye.

Touch and Go fanzine was the brainchild of Tesco Vee and Dave Stimson and was launched in Lansing, Michigan, in 1979. Major fanatics of the new punk happenings in the late ’70s, TV and DS set out to chronicle, lambaste, ridicule, and heap praise on all they arbitrarily loved or hated in the music communities in the US and abroad. In laughably minuscule press runs by today’s standards, T & G was made by guys within the Midwest scene strictly for the edification of scenesters and pals in other cities like DC, Philly, Boston, LA, SF, Chicago, et al.

Inspired by magazines such as Slash and Search and Destroy and writers like Claude Bessy and Chris Desjardines, TV and DS pumped out seventeen naughty, irreverent issues together, and TV did another five solo.

NYC is undoubtedly one of the most iconic cities in the world. Show someone from a different country a picture of the Empire State Building or the Brooklyn Bridge, and chances are they'll know you're talking about New York. From Aug. 24-28, the Central Park Conservancy Film Festival will be celebrating "Iconic New York" in another NYC icon, Central Park.

The eighth annual Central Park Conservancy Film Festival, presented by Bloomberg, will be held north of Sheep Meadow and five films will be shown; all featuring NYC icons.

Tues., Aug. 24: Fame
Wed., Aug. 25: The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3
Thurs., Aug. 26: Saturday Night Fever
Fri., Aug. 27: King Kong
Sat., Aug. 28: Manhattan

The screenings begin at 8:00 pm and are free to the public, but if you want a good spot, head over at 6:30 pm when gates open. Don't forget to bring a picnic so you can munch on some sandwiches as you watch John Travolta rip the dance floor.

As you get older, sometimes it gets harder to think of thoughtful, touching gifts to give to say your Mom or Grandma. After a certain age, a bouquet of pipe-cleaner flowers and a macaroni picture frame just doesn't cut it. Thankfully, Silver Jewelry Club is like a gift in itself, because they're literally giving away jewelry for free.

The site offers sterling silver jewelry with genuine gemstones, and you only have to pay a shipping and handling fee of $6.99. I understand this may sound like a horrible infomercial, but it's legit and here's how it works:

You go to the website where you'll find four different jewelry items, which can be anything from earrings to a necklace. There is a ticking time stamp under the picture, and once the time is up, a new free piece of jewelry comes up. If you like what you see, you can click to receive the jewelry of your choice and all you have to do is pay for the shipping & handling!

While browsing, I saw a ring that retails for $69.99, so the amount of money you're saving is really apparent. This is absolutely the perfect gift idea for Mom or Grandma, or better yet, yourself. I'm totally tempted to reward myself with a little bling, I mean, why not?
