Hey guys - want to be shaved by Carmen Electra? Here's your chance!

Carmen Electra "Deforests" Men in Public
April 30, Noon- 2:00pm
Madison Square Park
  • Men from the audience will be selected to be shaved!
  • Women are welcome to attend, but will not get shaved (even if they are hairier than the men..)
  • The first 100 men to arrive will get free gifts
In celebration of National Arbor Day, Carmen Electra is teaming up with Philips Norelco to challenge men to “Deforest Yourself. Reforest the World.”

Philips Norelco, the expert in “bodily deforestation,” is partnering with the Arbor Day Foundation in support of the organization’s mission to inspire people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees as well as help address the overgrown issue of deforestation in the world.

Starting today through June 30, 2010, Norelco will commit a donation of $75,000 – planting a minimum of one tree for every Bodygroom product sold, up to 75,000 trees.

To kick off the campaign, Norelco is inviting New York City’s hairiest men to “leaf” nothing to the imagination for a chance to have their chests “deforested” by Carmen herself in front of a crowd of onlookers in tree-lined Madison Square Park.

Consumers can visit www.ShaveEverywhere.com/Deforestation to learn more and demonstrate support for this vital cause.

Complimentary wine will be served at this book launch party for Some Girls: My Life in Harem.

Yes - HAREM, not HARLEM.

The powerHouse Arena is pleased to invite you to the NYC book launch party for:
Some Girls: My Life in a Harem
by Jillian Lauren

Reading, Signing & Discussion
In conversation with Melissa Febos, author of Whip Smart

Tuesday, May 4, 7–9pm
The powerHouse Arena
37 Main Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201

Please RSVP: rsvp@powerHouseArena.com

Jillian Lauren's memoir is a jaw dropping and engrossing coming-of-age tale about identity, adoption, tattoos, and the two years she spent in the harem of Prince Jefri of Brunei. Wine will be served.

About the book:
At eighteen, Jillian Lauren was an NYU theater school dropout with a tip about an upcoming audition. The "casting director" told her that a rich businessman in Singapore would pay pretty American women big bucks if they stayed for two weeks to spice up his parties. Soon, Jillian was on a plane to Borneo, where she would spend the next eighteen months in the harem of Prince Jefri Bolkiah, the youngest brother of the Sultan of Brunei, leaving behind her gritty East Village apartment for a palace with rugs laced with gold and trading her band of artist friends for a coterie of backstabbing beauties. More than just a sexy read set in an exotic land, Some Girls is also the story of how a rebellious teen found herself--and the courage to meet her birth mother and eventually adopt a baby boy.

About the author:
Jillian Lauren grew up in suburban New Jersey and fled across the water to New York City. She attended New York University for three minutes but promptly dropped out to work with Richard Foreman's Ontological Hysteric Theater and with The Wooster Group, among others. Lauren has an M.F.A. in creative writing and lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Weezer bassist Scott Shriner and their son Tariku.

Melissa Febos is the author of the BDSM memoir Whip Smart. She curates and hosts the popular monthly music and reading series, Mixer, on the Lower East Side, and teaches writing and literature at SUNY Purchase College and the Gotham Writers' Workshop, in addition to offering private editing and instruction.

DUNKIN DONUTS: Free Turbo coffee

Posted by nyc editor |

When you hear “TURBO,” what comes to mind? Rockets? Super heroes? Blender speeds?

Well put all that behind you, because this explosive word is now a crazy new flavor of Dunkin Donuts coffee!

And wait, there is even more good news. You can try Dunkin Donuts Turbo for free!

Just click here and send the fine people at DD your name and address and they’ll send a complimentary 1.1 oz sample right to your door. DD describes the new blend as a “mild-roasted coffee blend with an extra boost of delicious Dunkin’ Donuts flavor to get you through your day.” For those of us who are beginning to think that we have more coffee than blood pumping through our veins, a free added boost sounds like just what the financial planner ordered. Not the doctor. The doctor would actually probably advise against it.

Now you may anxiously wait by the door to experience your free taste of turbo.

It is clear from their most recent event that Nylon Magazine knows the way into a girl's heart: free and generous drinks, delicious food with finger-eating accessibility and complimentary hair stylin'. If this isn't the start to a wonderful Thursday night, then I don't know what is.

Last Thursday Nylon joined forces with Sebastian Salon to throw their latest soirée. The luxurious salon transformed their space into one fit for mingling; with 2 bars, a DJ, and a few open stations to give you a quick and beautiful blow dry.

There were four drinks, all Solerno brand: The Soleno Martini, Bellini, Lemonade and Spritz. Our personal favorites were the Bellini for it's taste factor (made with Solerno, blood orange and champagne...tastes like summer ladies) and the margarita, wonderful in it's own right but oh how we loved it for its strength.

The food spread was more diverse than I was expecting; there were skewers with mozzarella balls, tomato and basil; scallop ceviche, bruchtta, fruit, stuffed olives, and mini potatoes with creme fresh and caviar.

[Getting the hair done!]

And if you were pounced quickly, you could have been as lucky as my friends were to have their hair styled by a very helpful stylist named Jasellynne, using all Sebastian hair products. My friend Niki's naturally pin-straight hair left with curl, and Elle's left with body, bounce and shine.

They did hold us hostage (not that it was that difficult) until the end of the event to distribute our swag bags. We left with a copy of Nylon, a mini Sebastian shampoo and conditioner, 30% at Sebastian and a free trial gym membership.

I just bought two of these Groupons!

I can't tell you how many times when I go out in my killer heels and wish I had a pair of flats to wear on my way home - even if it is just a few steps from the bar to the taxi, then the taxi to my doorstep.

Every order comes in a lovely gift box with a tote bag for your heels, a 180-day replacement warranty, and a supply of invisible hemming tape ideal for facilitating the easy switch between flats and your stiletto stompers. I'm proud to announce that I will be competing at GUACTACULAR 2010, alongside Chris from the skint and other contestants!

What is Guactacular? Glad you asked. The New Yorker describes it as this:

Last year, the avocado-fuelled competitive tasting event Guactacular filled the front room at the Bell House, and then some. This year, it has plenty of room to spread out in the Brooklyn club’s main space. Twenty different guacamoles will be judged by food bloggers and the general public, and the accordionist Alex Meixner will lead a series of Mexican-influenced polkas to help things along. (nachosny.com.)

When: May 5, 2010
Where: The Bell House in Gowanus
Who: 20 guac-fiends take on the task of impressing your palate.
What else: Alex Meixner and a special Cinco De Mayo polka performance.
More?: Free Tecate and Dos Equis from 7-8pm and just $3 the rest of the night.

At only $12 a ticket, this event is not to be missed! So please come and say hi to me. Oh - and there's only 35 tickets left. GO BUY NOW!

Another fabulous event this evening! Go hang out with models, save butterflies :)

Project Monarch
Tuesday, April 20, 2010
7:00pm - 10:00pm
Milk Gallery
450 W.15th Street @ the corner of 10th Ave.
New York, NY

Come and enjoy the natural wonder and ephemeral beauty of the monarch butterfly ritual and its imminent demise in this wonderful exhibitions of photographs by Mexican fashion photographer Guillermo De Zamacona. The aim is to raise awareness of the dangers the Monarchs face with the increasing deforestation of their habitat.

Please join us at Milk Gallery on April 21, 2010 7-10PM

ABOUT THE PROJECTEvery year many millions of Monarch butterflies travel from Canada to the forests North West of Mexico City, in the areas near the borders of the States of Mexico and of Michoacan, to escape the unforgiving winters.

This amazing spectacle happens only there, and although during their journey the butterflies do stop in certain places in the U.S. (the Monarch butterfly is the animal of the State of Texas for instance), it is only South of the border were they converge in such massive numbers. Tourists descend by the thousands to behold this natural wonder.

But this natural wonder is in jeopardy. In the 2007-2008 period, these forests lost over 640 acres. According to the WWF(World Wildlife Fund), the deforestation increased by 6.5% in that year alone, killing 250 million butterflies as a result. There is no end in sight to this practice. http://www.worldwildlife.org/species/finder/monarchbutterflies/monarchbutterflies.html

The ephemeral beauty of the monarch’s ritual, and its imminent demise was the genesis for PROJECT MONARCH. Fashion photographer Guillermo de Zamacona developed the idea of an exhibition consisting of arresting images faithful to his artistic origins, which could also serve to raise awareness of the dangers that Monarchs face. While on location shooting, another purpose arose: discovering that the people who live at the foot of the mountain, Sierra Chincua live in deplorable conditions: they have no electricity, no running water, and have almost no income the 8 months of the year that the butterflies aren't there, as they live off of tourism. A portion of any sales will be used to provide them with solar powered energy and teach them how to make the water they have access to safe to drink.

This project has many volunteers and benefactors: the Governments of the States of Mexico and of Michoacan are sponsoring the exhibition, as well as Eugenio Lopez, the largest contemporary art collector in Latin America. Subjects include supermodel Heidi Mount (IMG) and R.J. (Wilhelmina), Felix Cane, World Pole Dancing Champion; she is also now at Cirque du Soleil's adult show Zumanity in Las Vegas.

The casting was done by Jennifer Venditti. Production by Richard Villani

The show is opening at Milk Gallery in the Spring of 2010 and later on in the year in Mexico City. The text for the vestibular wall will be penned by Dale Peck.

There's a new Gramercy area restaurant called Exchange Bar & Grill, and they have introduced their own in-house ‘stock market’ based menu. Prices at the bar will be based on demand and are broadcasted on the giant ticker screen that runs the 35-foot length of the bar, with impromptu announcements of a ‘reverse market’ designed to work in the crowd’s drinking favor!

For example, everyone (strangers & friends alike) could band together to order a ‘round’ of the same item, and it would be cheaper for all as a result. Bar-goers can also have fun by posting personal messages on the ticker screen, ie: ‘happy birthday’ or ‘hey you at the end of the bar, can I buy you a drink!’

The lounge-like space features both a bar and dinner menu. Special lunch & brunch menus will be be introduced at a later date.

Happy hour runs from noon to 7pm daily, featuring $3 beers and $5 well drinks.

To celebrate its opening, Exchange is offering new customers a complimentary beer or glass of wine with purchase of any meal that costs $9 or more. To take advantage of the limited-time promotion, mention the code “Market Price” to your server at the next visit! This promo expires April 15, 2010.

Let me preface this deal by saying it's only at participating locations. Since there's a ton of Wendy's in NYC, I have neither the time or patience to call every single one... so if you see this deal in any Wendy's in New York City, let me know!

"Donate $1 to charity at participating Wendy's and receive a key tag that entitles you to one free Jr. Frosty per visit (with purchase) through 12/31/10."

One of the most exciting things about living in NYC is the vibrant arts scene we all get to enjoy. Persoanlly, knowing I had this community at the tips of my fingers is one of the things that inspired me the most to move to New York City post-college.

Part of that vibrant art scene is THE FROG AND PEACH THEATRE CO, and I've got a pair of tickets to giveaway to their version of MACBETH, one of Shakespeare's most popular tragedies!

To enter, just fill out the Google form below. I'll be attending the show myself, courtesy of the theater, so expect a full review from my date for the evening, Alan Danzis. (He loves Shakespeare, so trust me, it will be much better coming from him.)

Here's more details on the show! (And if you don't win tickets, they only cost $18 each, which is a fantastic price. Buy tickets here.)

MACBETH
APRIL 15 - MAY 9, 2010
THE WEST END THEATRE
The Church of St. Paul & St. Andrew
263 West 86th Street, 2nd Fl. --wheelchair accessible
Directed by LYNNEA BENSON

Lord & Lady Macbeth are very much in love-- the envy of the Scottish nobility. He's an extraordinary warrior who's tough, witty, and honorable. She's his lovely, charming, soul mate who wants what's best for him. MACBETH is the story of how they lose their souls, in haunting, blood-spattered detail.

Fueled by ambition, Macbeth performs unspeakable acts when three strange and beautiful Witches appear with promises of greatness. One murder leads to another; and another, and still more in this shockingly modern tale of brutality, eroticism, and the supernatural.

*Macbeth contains brief nudity and portrays acts of extreme violence.

Running Time: 2 hours, 20 minutes.

Schedule:
APRIL 15 - MAY 9, 2010
Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.
Fridays at 7:30 p.m.
Saturdays at 7:30p.m.
Sundays at 3 p.m.
*Sunday Matinees are followed by an informal talk-back with cast and Artistic Director.

Tickets: $18 and are now available online at http://www.smarttix.com/ or by calling (212) 868-4444. Tickets may also be purchased in-person at the theater ½ hour prior to the performance.

One Cent ATT Phones at Amazon.com

Posted by ricebird |

From Alan Danzis, tech whiz kid extraordinaire:

In the market for a new cell phone and you’ve already decided to go to AT&T for service? You should check out Amazon’s new deal: they’re selling every AT&T phone they carry for 1 cent (with a 2 year contract). iPhone not included folks.

Seriously, if you need a new phone, you should check out this deal. Gizmodo has a list of all comparable phones. If Katharine didn’t use Verizon Wireless, I’d suggest she check it out, since she’s always misplacing her phone…

Deal expires April 16, next Friday.

Oh, I almost forgot, you can also buy the new Nokia Nuron phone from Amazon as well for one cent—and that deal isn’t expiring any time soon. It runs on T-Mobile, it’s a touch screen smart phone, and it offers a optional (so not mandatory) $10 data plan.

Full disclosure—Nokia is a client of mine.
