SWAG BAG: Free Ensure Shake and coupon

Posted by nyc editor |

My fondest memory of Ensure was visiting a good friend in the hospital and force feeding it to her since she couldn't eat solid food. She was also a "little" out of it and SHE made a video of her drugged up on her phone (which has since been banished and is not available on Youtube.)
Special Offer on Ensure® Shakes
Coupons for a Free Shake and Savings on a Six-pack!

Getting your hands on one of the creamy, delightful flavors of Ensure is easy. Just answer a few quick questions to receive a coupon — one for a free Ensure 8-fl-oz shake or one for savings on the many flavors and varieties of Ensure six-packs.

(Only one submission per household. Applicable within the United States only.)

Did you miss Mobile Monday?

No worries, Matt Caldecutt of Paint the Town Red posted a wonderful recap, which I'm reblogging in full (with his permission, like all good bloggers do):

MobileMonday Global hosted its inaugural event in Brooklyn’s DUMBO neighborhood or, as the Carrot Creative team would prefer it be called, New York City’s Digital District on (you guessed it) Monday night [Editor’s Note: Yes, I have noticed that they’re even checking in there now using that name for the neighborhood.]. Billed as Mobile Monday Brooklyn or #MoMoBk on Twitter, the event consisted of networking (with beer provided by venture capital firm RRE Ventures) and eight presentations by New-York City based developers [Editor’s Note: The invitation actually said “local NYC and Brooklyn developers”, but since the organizer hails from Boston, I’ll cut her some slack for not realizing that they’re the same city.]

Since I described what was presented elsewhere, I’ll stick to some general observations about the event here and, of course, make a note of whom I saw. First, the DUMBO Loft is a great venue. It’s large and easily accommodated the 100 or so attendees. I seriously thought it smelled like paint, but I’ll let that slide. The free drinks were a nice touch, but would it really have killed the organizers to get some food? It didn’t have to be passed hors d’oeuvres, but cheese and crackers would have been nice. Lastly, why wasn’t there a live Internet connection for presenters? We don’t typically do Powerpoint presentations at technology events here. But again, it was their first event so we’ll see how they do at the next one.

--MC, Paint the Town Red

That wonderful blog The Consumerist is hosting a meetup next week! (Mucho thanks to a co-worker for the nonchalant heads up.) FREE BEER. And food.

Consumerist NYC Meetup: 1/21 5-7pm Dylan Murphy's

Yo gang it's time for another Consumerist meetup with free beer!
Date: Thursday, January 21, 2010
Time: 5-7 p.m.
Place: Dylan Murphy’s - 1453 3rd Avenue (between 83rd and 84th), NYC

We're hooking up with our friend Bob Sullivan of MSNBC's Red Tape Chronicles to do a panel discussion on what's really bringing down the American consumer: poor math skills. Joining us will be BillShrink CEO Peter Phram and Loyola professor Joseph Ganem.

As always, free Consumerist tshirts will be in effect, along with our new anti gift cards and maybe some other things we concoct.

I am sorry that once again we are dissing the rest of the country by continuing to have meetups in the same town where we live. However, we are partially making up for this by making Bob bring snacks. (Last time there were no snacks and multiple parties informed us this was not appropriate).

To get there via subway: 456 to 86th.

About The Consumerist
The Consumerist empowers consumers by informing and entertaining them about the top consumer issues of the day. We are a leading online resource for consumer-driven advice about dealing with everything from non-existent customer service to onerous cell-phone contracts to ever-shrinking (and ever-more-expensive) grocery products. The Consumerist is published by Consumer Media LLC, a not-for-profit subsidiary of Consumers Union, and takes no outside advertising.

The Consumerist highlights the persistent, shameless gaffes of modern consumerism - and the latest scams, rip-offs, hot deals and freebies. We also encourage our readers to tell us about their everyday experiences with absurdities of consumer culture - and suggest ways for them to fight back.

Mayahuel: $1 Taco Sundays

Posted by nyc editor |

Today's URBAN DADDY has given me something to look forward to on Sundays! Nommmmmm

$1 Tacos at Mayahuel

The East Village tequila den inaugurates $1 taco Sundays by practically giving away chicken, pork or chorizo soft tacos topped with cilantro, radishes and lime, which usually cost 12 bucks. It's the most encouraging instance of taco-based reverse inflation we've yet come across.

3D film Archangel: Wine + Cheese, Jan 13, 7pm

Posted by nyc editor |

3D film is trending right now... get one in along with some complimentary wine and cheese at the screening of the short film Archangel tomorrow.

Special Screening of the 3D film Archangel
Wednesday January 13 at 7pm
Dolby Screening Room
1350 6th Avenue at 55th Street in New York City

Screening is free and open to the public

There will be a Q+A with the filmmakers following the screening, and 3D glasses will be provided free of charge. The film will screen two or three times during the hour.

About the movie:

There is a memory shared by thousands, of a shadow that wrapped around the earth as the sun went dark.

And then came the light, from everywhere, all at once, and the dreams of an extinct species began to explode from the crevices of a scorched earth; from silicate and water rose towers millions of stories tall, shooting upwards and wrapping around the stars.

The sum total of everything that ever was, is, and shall be, a universe that contains all things possible to imagine, now glistens in the light of the furthest stars as the new order balloons outwards through the light cone.

In a strange slumber, unaware, an American city slowly decays. There, a troubled young man is plagued by fits of violent rage. One day, in a horrific trance, he slaughters a group of innocents. Despondent, ashamed and unable to understand his actions, he decides to end his life.

He is rescued from suicide by a woman who promises to explain the mystery of his awful abilities, a woman who is just like him.

Archangel, rise.

Thanks to Goldstar, some of the girls and I whipped out our plaid shirts (aka, hit up Strawberry in Union Square for a cheap plaid shirt) and hit the Professional Bull Riders event at Madison Square Garden!

[We got our own row, complete with a rack to hold our beers!]

All types of New Yorkers came out in full force western gear. Animal activists were outside screaming about bull rights. There was actual dirt on the floor of the Garden. A rodeo clown danced to Micheal Jackson. Children rode sheep at half time. More cowboys than I'd like to count almost got their skulls kicked in.

[None of us had hats, but some of us borrowed them for a pic or two!]

[Getting super close to the action - plus we convinced someone that yelled at us a few times to snap this pic.]

Believe it or not, I think this was my first time at the Garden. My only complaint (besides paying $9 a beer) was when I had to go downstairs to meet a friend and I was forced to take the stairs since all escalators were going up ;)

[This guy was missing at least 4 front teeth. #dentalfail]

[If you look closely, you can see the sheep held in the corner. Small children rode these sheep during half time. I'm not so sure no sheep or children were harmed.]

Thanks to friends in low awesome places, me and my friend Katherine dolled up (mink coats, anyone?) for the NYC red carpet premier of Daybreakers, starring Ethan Hawk and directed by the Spierig brothers.

We skipped the will call line and went straight into the lobby for our fresh popcorn and soda. To my mild surprise the crowd was quite mixed – some people we dressed to the nines and others look like they came straight from the welfare office.

Daybreakers plot: In the year 2019, a plague has transformed most every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind. (via IMDB)
In my opinion the plot was amazing [human race is dying out – therefore so will we, haaalp!], the details were comical [blood coffee! human farms! evil pharma company!], the gore was fantastic [exploding bodies! vampire bats!], but the story and characters were a little weak…although I will say that the pharma head’s daughter will break your heart, but I won’t spoil it by telling you why...

Rainbow and Arrow – A Solo Exhibit of Work by Luke Jackson Opening reception
White Rabbit
145 East Houston St.New York, NY
F-Train’s 2nd Ave Station
Friday January 8, 7-10pm
On view through Feb 2, 2010

Artist’s Statement: “My central motive when creating is to free myself from preconception and the tyranny of Meaning, i.e. the human impulse to categorize. I believe that painting should not merely express the artist but should ideally also allow the viewer to derive several unique interpretations and reactions whilst simultaneously freeing that viewer from the perceived obligation to discover the artist’s original intent; something that often even the artist does not or can not know. In short, Art says as much about the viewer as the it does about the Artist.”

Bio: Born on March 23, 1979 in Camaiore, a small town near the coast of the Tuscan province of Lucca in northern Italy, Luke Jackson’s family lived in the house that his father, renowned artist Harry Jackson, built in 1954. Luke’s high school education took place in Cody, Wyoming, Seattle, Washington, and Bath, Maine. He did his college foundation studies in Florence, Italy at S.A.C.I. in 1998 and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts at UWE Bristol, England in 2002. In Bristol, Luke studied for several years under his mentor, Terence Wilson Fletcher. Luke has been living and working in New York since July 2004.

You can view a preview of this exhibit online here.

I won't be around on January 16, but this sounds like a good pregame for those who are. I'm not sure if the $15 is for everything, or only if you want to eat the apps.

It's been awhile since I've seen items worthy of Grab Bag status. Today I bring you TWO, which I found on My Dallas Mommy:

First, try out a free Ivan Mog gourmet apple! You get to pick your flavor (include cocoa, M&Ms and butter pecan! I selected butter pecan.)

Ivan Mog's Gourmet Caramel Apples have set the standard for gourmet apple treats, with our homemade kettle caramel, our use if all-natural ingredients and no preservatives, our jumbo firm and slightly tart granny smith apples, and a host of delicious toppings and flavors!

Second, sample Stevia in the Raw. Stevia is my sweetener of RECORD - it's an all natural 0-calorie sweetener extracted from the stevia plant. Until sometime last year, the USDA banned stevia from being marketed in the USA as a sweetener thanks to artificial sweetener lobbyists - you could only buy it in health stores as a "supplement." Something changed and now Stevia is mainstream (something to do with soft drink companies), and much CHEAPER (thank God). Forget sugar and forget Equal - get Stevia!

Stevia Extract in The Raw™ is the purest national brand stevia sweetener available. Only from the maker of Sugar In The Raw ®. SteviaExtract In The Raw™ just gives you the pure sweetening power of stevia. It's the all–natural, zero calorie sweetener that costs less and tastes great.

NYC Recession Diary Emails! SIGN UP!

Posted by ricebird |

Hey Folks! Just a reminder to sign up for NYC Recession Diary emails! Don't miss a thing..

I want to keep in touch (I'm needy).

I've finally found discount tickets to Love, Loss and What I Wore!

This show came out early fall in '09 and I was all about it, but being budget-minded a $75 ticket (plus convincing a friend to buy a $75 ticket) is a burden I was unwilling to bear.

Thanks to Goldstar, one of my FAVORITE discount event sites, you can buy a $37.50 ticket with a $7.50 service fee, equating to a $45 ticket for the Jan 10, 7 pm show! The theater is small (my favorite off-Broadway bonus) so you'll be able to see everything - from their facial expressions to the sequins on their skirts.
Show Description:

Love, Loss and What I Wore is an intimate collection of stories by Nora and Delia Ephron, based on the bestselling book by Ilene Beckerman and supplemented by recollections from friends of the Ephrons. The show uses clothing and other accessories to trigger stories of poignant memories. The cast is a rotating selection of five all-star actors who perform for four weeks at a time.

Groupon - you really set the stage for collective buying power. Today I got an email from Lifebooker introducing me to Lifebooker Loot...and guess what service they're selling first?

Boyfriend for Hire!

Hey now, tickle me senseless.

So in case you missed it first time around, round back and purchase your new handy dandy 2-hour boyfriend for $75, normally $200 (sexual services will have to be negotiated platonically).

From Lifebooker Loot's email:

Ladies (and Gentlemen), we bring you ... Boyfriend for Hire at 63% off! That means you can get certificates for 2 hours of handyman work for only $75 (normally $200).This team of bonded and insured technicians has over 150 years of combined professional experience. Find a single guy in NYC that can say that! These skilled workmen are ready to assemble, paint, fix, hang, grout, tile, saw, sand, repair and remodel everything you've been wanting to do (and everything your landlord has been neglecting to take care of).

Exclusively on Lifebooker Loot, you can purchase up to 6 certificates, and use up to 4 in one visit! Call on your brawny beaux for a quick fix whenever needed, or have him work a full day and get that big job done. With this deal you can get an 8 hour day of skilled labor for $300!

P.S. Can someone please purchase this service and tell me if the "boyfriends" are as hot as we hope they are?!

P.P.S. Hey Boyfriend for Hire - how about you send someone over free of charge? I'll let the world know.

Looks like Frutober is still getting some pick up! Janice over at Gigabiting had this to say about me:

"This 20-something single* girl-about-town strives to maintain her Sex and the City lifestyle while budgeting a mere $75 for a month of dining. Her NYC Recession Diary entries are full of free parties, cheap drinks, and open bars, with a full $25 of her budget dedicated to bartender tips."

Good bartenders deserve their tips, dammit!

*I'd like to say Happy New Years, my dearest readers! I hope 2010 brings us closer than ever - but not too close. Against Gigabiting's belief, I am not single ;)
