I'm happy to announce that Katherine Epstein has joined NYCRD as our music contributer! Lately she goes to more shows in a week than I go to open bars in month. Love this girl.

If you weren’t at the free Hey Monday show presented by Lockerz.com at Highline Ballroom on Monday night, then you missed a lot.

A few weeks ago, I fell in love with the band Hey Monday when I saw them play the AP tour and at Bamboozle. There was actually a moment last week where I marched myself to Best Buy to pick up this album because I couldn’t live another minute without it. Lead singer Cassadee Pope is a little diva that really gives this band powerful potential. When I happened to see that they were not only playing at Highline, but it was FREE, I was over the moon. Their songs “6 Months,” which Cassadee peformed acapella, and “Candles” are in a different league than some of the garbage on the radio right now.

I got in line an hour-and-a-half early because I viewed on Twitter that fans were already outside. Being a crazy fan myself, I brought a book to keep me company—ironically called I Don't Care About Your Band -while I waited for my friend Martha to join me. The show opened with a fun, ridiculously good-looking band out of Pittsburgh called The Composure. Hey Monday killed it, and even though Cassadee was feeling under the weather, she finished out their set. We also learned that Hey Monday will be writing new music while they are on the road this summer for Warped Tour, which may mean a new album sometime in the near future.

Stay tuned, as I’ll be corresponding for NYC Recession Diary about all of the free concert goodness going on in the city that never sleeps. With so many awesome free shows to go to, goodness knows I never do. Feel free to follow my concert happenings on Twitter at @KweenofLeon.
